IdeaFest at USD

  • University of South Dakota - Muenster University Center 414 East Clark Street Vermillion, SD, 57069 United States (map)

IdeaFest is an annual event celebrating student research, creative scholarship and academic engagement. Undergraduate and graduate students in all disciplines present their work in oral and poster presentations, live performances, readings, exhibits and displays. Not only does it offer students a unique opportunity to present their work, it's a way for the surrounding community to see how research and other academic activities enhance the education of students. As a highlight of the event, nationally recognized keynote speakers are invited to present their involvement in similar endeavors.

April 4: keynote address by Lauren Freese, Ph.D in the MUC Ballroom, 4 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Freese is an assistant professor of Art History in the Department of Art at the University of South Dakota. Her research takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of art history, utilizing food studies to better understand depictions of food and eating in American art.

The title of her talk is "Eating, Drinking, and the Construction of Identity: An Interdisciplinary Analysis of Artistic Identity in the American Popular Press."

April 5: keynote address by Dr. Patricia Nez Henderson in the MUC Ballroom, 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. Dr. Henderson is a member of the Dine' (Navajo) tribe and serves as the Vice President for the Black Hills Center for American Indian Health, an American Indian nonprofit health organization located in Rapid City, S.D.

Dr. Henderson is considered one of the leading authorities on tobacco control in American Indian communities. For the past eighteen years, she has collaborated with Tribes and tribal communities to implement comprehensive tobacco control and prevention programs.
